Various Artists: Archipelago; Cosmic Fusion Gems from France 1978 – 1988 (Isle of Jura, digital outlets)

Something elsewhere for you . . .

Isle of Jura is a label out of Adelaide, Australia run by Kevin Griffiths who performs as Jura Soundsystem.

The label digs through crates and bins for rare gems to reissue and compile, and has the Temples of Jura imprint for new original work by a roster of artists.

This compilation is what it says on the box: dreamy, dubby and often atmospheric music (songs mostly in French) and early up Cecilia Angeles goes the whole Je t'aime . . . moi non plus at the end of the 11 minute Climax: Our First Day of Love which segues into the uplifting It;'s a Love Day which might have come from some post-Hair stage show.

Right at the end is a dub version of Princess Erika's Trop De Bla Bla by Dennis Bovell. It's very cool.

Compiler Griffiths has a very good ear and also gives himself a wide brief: here is Remy Boussengui from Gabon with the sprightly reggae lope of Coco Lando; the well known Francis Bebey from Cameroon with the funky jazz groove of Crocodile Crocodile Crocodile; the Makossa-cum-Afro-boogie sound of Cameroon's Egide Sadey . . .

From Paris to Martinique, this collection offers freshness from the past, the exoticism of Francophone artists and the spotlight on the dancefloor as much as the cosmos as the album title suggests.

One for DJs and samplers particularly.
