Alistair Fraser: Liminal Exit (Oro, digital outlets)

Given that liminal means something like a place of transition, a space between other places or a threshold, the title here – where traditional taonga pūoro co-exists with 21st century technology in the form of effects pedals and sound manipulation – is also a descriptor.

Alistair Fraser explores that marriage of the past and future in pieces which exist in the present, where the crackles and stormy sonics of one piece are described by its title: Loud Light.

As with many such pure explorations of sound which have appeared in our Further Outwhere pages, as this does, there's a sci-fi futurism evident also. Again titles are the clue: Datastream Haerenga, Ghost Capacitor (which really does sound like a ghost in the machinery), Oscillation Ritual . . .

These nine pieces exist in that space between where taonga pūoro evoke the world of myth and spirits, and where sound waves bounce off space dust in the endless dark.

Sound designs for a world to be imagined.
