A NOT RECOMMENDED RECORD: The Beatles: Live in Stockholm 1964

From time to time we have a Recommended Record, an album which you deserve to have on vinyl because it plays better that way, has an especially interesting cover (gatefold sleeve, lyrics, credits etc) and it just feels right on record.

This album of the Beatles live in Stockholm comes in an excellent cover but . . .

We knew what we were getting in to because we read the back cover (see below), but we bought it anyway because we thought it might be interesting for our Nirvana-loving, guitar playing 11 year old grandson who lives in Stockholm.

But despite what it said on the back cover it was actually worse than our very low level of expectation.

Yes, you can hear Lennon if you imagine he's on a dodgy telephone line from Caracas and Ringo's vocal are all but inaudible also.

Which rather spoils Lennon's turn on You Can't Do That and Ringo on I Wanna Be Your Man.

Lennon also missing on I Saw Her Standing There, She Loves You and Can't Buy Me Love.

The tapes also seem to speed up in places so it's not just McCartney and Harrison on vocals but rather a Chipmunked version of them.

Harrison does however throw himself into Roll Over Beethoven, albeit shouting the song rather than singing it.

So there it is. We listened so you don't have to.

And nor will the grandson, it could put him off this band for life.

.

It comes from this source which specialises in Sixties bands, compilations and broadcast music that is now in the public domain
