ONE WE MISSED: Picky Hippers, Full Flavour Behaviour (bandcamp)

We forgive ourselves for not knowing about this album which came out in May. Not a lot from Kaikoura comes to our attention, and it was only last month that a friend of the band got in touch but somewhat undersold it: “Would love you to take a listen of this and perhaps critique it. Picky Hippers are Kaikoura based and rocking our piece of paradise”.

In the great tradition of jam bands, Picky Hippers channel Primus/Chili Peppers' hard funk, the excitement of Alabama Shakes and some serious Sixties-style guitar-hero attack.

Yet aside from six minute-plus Cream-cum-psychedelic roll of Feel the Love, these 10 songs are short and sharp (most come in under four minutes) but they cram a lot of sax, guitar and groove in.

This is some fine punky funk in places with the intensity turned down for Soulless Summer.

Picky Hippers are some seriously good, Stoned Guitar musicians – strap yourself in for Feel the Love – and I have no doubt they rock Kaikoura . . . and beyond given half the chance.
