Adam Hattaway and the Haunters: Anthology 2018-2023

Christchurch's Adam Hattaway and the Haunters have released six albums (one a double) of country rock and country-influenced rock'n'roll shaped into memorable originals.

So they have fully earned this 16-song compilation.

They explore country-soul, Seventies Rolling Stones, and much more, and over the years we have reviewed a number of their albums and consider their 2021 Woolston, Texas one of their finest.

Hattaway/Haunters don't confine themselves to the axis of country and rock because a song like The Magician has a falsetto, country-disco groove, I Need Your Needs has a bratty Seventiespower-pop quality and I Hardly Exist is a broken-hearted country ballad.

Salt here could have graced an early Tom Petty album.

Here too are Jon Toogood guesting on Riding the River, a reduced line-up with Barry Saunders on his original Keep On and a live Turnaround.

In the past we've probably mentioned the Saints alongside the Stones, but wherever you draw the line on influences this comes off as an excellent and persuasive compilation, just in time for Christmas.

You can hear and buy this album at bandcamp here where they offer a steal of a deal on all the albums as digital downloads for about $50.
