Marc Chesterman: Koala Time (digital outlets)

Experimental musician Marc Chesterman has appeared previously at Elsewhere on the soundtrack to Florian Habicht's film Woodenhead (and Woodenhead Reimagined) and his own Jean's Piano in which he sampled phrases played on a very old piano which we liked very much: “A lovely and unexpected harmonious blend of old and new,” we said.

This album could not be more different.

Here Chesterman uses a phone programme called Koala to sample from old vinyl and thereafter the creative process of inventing beats, atmospheres and rhythms becomes the project.

The result here is six short atmospheric soundscapes which refer to very little outside themselves.

Some might hear early This Heat or Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark here, but pieces like Omsk and Dreamin' are very much out on their own.

Not for everyone of course, but very approachable and each comes with a video created at random using another app.

A rewarding path to get lost in for him and us.
