Keeping Up Appearances
RECOMMENDED RECORD: Rodney Fisher and the Response: Art School Dropout (digital outlets)

From time to time Elsewhere will single out a recent release we recommend on vinyl, like this which comes in electric blue with a booklet of Fisher's thoughts about the making of the album, the lyrics for which you need a microscope to read and a classy art school cover.

Former Goodshirt singer-songwriter Fisher – who subsequently enjoyed a solo career but also spent a lot of time managing venues and assisting other artists – now relaunches himself with The Response.

This is a sophisticated collection of quiet, crafted, atmospheric guitar-based pop which sets his sometimes wistful vocals and reflective lyrics against gentle electronic elements.

Folksy dream pop (By the Sea), yacht-rock (Keeping Up Appearances with Terrible Sons), a lovely ballad (Take It Slow) and straight-ahead but dialed-back pop (Fate).

Screenshot_2023_09_30_at_10.43.37_AMJust a little along the lines of Neil Finn's airy albums (Dizzy Heights, Out of Silence) but more folksy, if you are looking for a reference point.

At its heart this is serious (the glistening Something Nothing) but tempered by a sense of optimism.

Quite something.
